Growing up in a tourist town can be difficult. Wages are low, and most jobs are seasonal. Many of the beloved children here are either transient or have parents who work two, or even three, jobs to support their families throughout the year.
Despite these setbacks, the diverse K-6 students in our high-poverty school are eager to learn and ready to take on the world.
At our school library, we strive to support their natural curiosity, enthusiasm, and thirst for knowledge. They are our future leaders, and we love them for it.
Unfortunately, funding can be difficult, especially in a low-income school in a tiny, remote, seasonal town like ours. While our library does what we can with what we have, sometimes extra help is needed. This is why we turn to you.
My Project
The music section in our library is old, dusty, and out-of-date. While many of the books describe various instruments, none of them teach students how to actually play them. Many of the books discuss how fun it is to sing, yet none of them provide lyrics and music. And, most frustrating of all, while many of the texts reference songs that were popular when the books were first published -- mostly in the 1970s-1990s -- they are not relevant to our students, all of whom were born in the 21st century.
We would like to remedy this by updating the music section in our school library.
We want students to flock to these shelves in order to learn how to play instruments, sing their favorite songs, and write music of their own.
In addition, we want this section to provide resources for teachers who would like to integrate music into their own classrooms.
To this end, the books on our list include high-interest, easy-to-read manuals for learning a variety of instruments. This way students may check them out, take them home, and learn to play on their own. We are also requesting books with sheet music, so students can widen their repertoire of songs, and so classes can use them to liven up lessons or to put on performances. To top it off, we would love to receive a few books about writing lyrics and producing songs, so our most creative students can apply what they know about music to developing their own.
Together we can help our students cultivate a knowledge of -- and love for -- music.
