This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at an urban school where the students want to learn, but don't always have the means. As an elementary teacher in a low income, high poverty school district, I work to create meaningful learning experiences. The students face many challenges on a daily basis both in and out of the classroom. I strive to make our classroom a safe place with consistency and routine for my students. I want my students to leave fourth grade with wonderful memories of the school year.
My Project
My students love reading about up to date news. The Scholastic News is a wonderful example of a kid's newspaper and magazine combined into one. The graphs on the back help learn the skill of reading maps and graphs. The articles are so informative and the surveys lead to intense discussions in groups and in pairs.
This past year, the Scholastic News was one of the highlights.
The children loved reading the articles, doing the supplemental activities, and taking the magazine home to share with his or her family. Having the Scholastic News as part of our week made the students happy, and we can't wait to share it again.
