My combination kindergarten to eighth grade classes in an ALE (Alternative Learning Environment), are from a lower income area of our county. We collaborate with families who choose homeschooling as their primary means of education. Many of these students have not had any experience in a traditional classroom setting. My classroom is their positive experience in their educational journey. We focus on experiential learning and service as we strive to build community among the families who choose to be part of this program.
My class has a wide range of learning needs and I have seen an increase in the number of students who struggle greatly with the ability to focus.
In the spring, we set our more traditional classes aside for one week and take our learning on the road. My students will be studying the First Nation and during the interim, we will be visiting Washington Tribes to learn of their culture and history. These are kids working to overcome some great obstacles and are very positive learners. Although they face adversity, these kids push themselves, take risks in the classroom and try their best daily. I am incredibly proud of them!
My Project
Our science curriculum was developed in the late 80’s and was last updated nearly 20 years ago. My students love animals and were fascinated by the small introduction we have had in our room. I think that having animals in our classroom is a great source of inspiration for research and writing, as well as providing my students a therapeutic way to calm themselves in times of stress or anxiety. Many students in our school, not just the students in my classroom, have benefited from our animals by coming to observe them as a reward or for a sensory break from their classroom. Now students will be able to better understand their structures.
My students would love to have the ability it look deeper into science and having microscopes that attach to our Chromebooks will enable them to look at the structures of life.
This would provide the opportunity for them to observe, learn, and part of the animal we care for in the class. It would benefit them academically, as well as socially and emotionally.
