Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 4 sections of AP Environmental Science to approximately 130 urban Juniors and Seniors. Most of my students are Hispanic, while the remainder are white, black and Asian. Two thirds of school's population qualify for free and reduced lunch, and my students come from a wide range of Social Economic Status.
My students are amazing, hard working, kids who are passionate about learning environmental issues.
Most of my students have limited exposure to the outdoors but are excited each day to learn about how they can help the environment. I try to incorporate many lab experiments and other simulations to help my students grasp different scientific concepts related to the course.
Many of the projects that I request funding for are for lab supplies that we use on a regular basis. As you can imagine, the need of lab consumables for 130 students is quite burdensome. It's because of the generosity of people like yourself that makes learning science interesting and exciting for my students.
Please help our students have the supplies that they need in order to have a great learning atmosphere! Thank you so much
My Project
The soil model will help my students understand different soil horizons and help them understand the importance of top soil formation as well as the environmental problems that can result from soil erosion.
These materials will be used for our students to test the soil fertility in our high school's garden!
We will share our results with the Botany class and assess the fertility of campus' gardens.
The predator card game is a fun activity that will help my students see how predator prey relationships work in a deciduous forest. My students are great kids who love to have fun in the classroom. What an exciting way to learn about such a morbid fact of life!
