Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a brilliant, curious and passionate, and are inspired to learn about the human body and human health. They come from an urban underserved, diverse community, and have limited access to health careers and high quality lab equipment. Our school and local community suffer from a disproportionate number of chronic health issues, particularly hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes.
My Physiology students love any opportunity to make connections between the human body and community health issues, especially when they do engaging, hands-on activities and projects.
I am passionate about teaching my students about risk factors leading to these illnesses (along with others), and giving my students exposure to health careers. Thus, many of my projects are geared towards making practical applications of physiology content into teen health, and showing my students ways they can improve their own habits to promote better personal and community health, as well.
My Project
In the cardiovascular unit, students will learn about how the heart pumps the blood around the body. Further, they will make connections between health and disease, ultimately understanding the impact of high blood pressure on the body and risk factors leading to hypertension.
I want my students to have the opportunity to use real manual blood pressure cuffs to learn how to measure each other's blood pressure.
This will engage them in learning about they physiology of blood pressure (arterial systolic and diastolic pressure), as well as help them envision themselves as a health professional! My students will be thrilled to use high quality blood pressure cuffs on each other and to listen to the real heart beats of their peers.
