My students need rocket kits to ignite their passion for science with a "hands-on, real-life, light-the-ignition-and-watch-it-soar-into-the-sky" rocket.
My students attend an urban, public school district with over 60% on free and reduced lunch. There are three sixth grade classes at our school, and each one is run by a different program. One of our programs serves a population of gifted students, while a second program requires an application process and uses community collaboration to serve students.
My classroom serves the students in our neighborhood, and they have a wide variety of needs.
Some are language learners, students with special needs, homeless, and children who take over the role of caregiver in their families while parents struggle with their own issues. This group of students qualifies as a Title I population, but when mixed with the entire student body of our school, we miss the target for extra funding and resources that are provided to Title 1 schools.
With the help of your generous donation, I will be able to provide experiences that are real-life and hands on. My hope is that my students will develop a love for science and engineering that they hold on to for the rest of their lives. These kids will be the future scientists, mathematicians, and technology gurus of our future.
My Project
How can we learn about rockets without any rockets? Sure, we could read a book, label a diagram, or even watch a video; but how do you really ignite a student's passion for science, engineering, math and technology? With a "hands-on, real-life, light-the-ignition-and-watch-it-soar-into-the-sky" rocket.
These resources will allow my sixth graders to actually construct rockets, engineer them to their liking, fly them, and compare the results!
We will use free, on-line software to test each student's own rocketry-engineering ideas in a rocket simulation where they can predict the speed, height, and flight time for their rocket creation and record it in their science notebooks.
Just picture a beautiful morning; the wide, green playground dotted with a school-full of students, parents, community members all watching the launch-pad as two girls from very different backgrounds, proudly prepare their rockets for launch. The other students have their science notebooks ready to record data. 3,2,1 Blast-off! Side by side they hit the launch buttons, the crowd goes wild, both girls giggle with delight as they watch their rockets soar!
