I work for an alternative high school, mainly for those students that have fallen behind or have fallen through the cracks all their lives. Many of my students come from poverty leveled families. Living in and out of motels. Many are dealing with custody battles and move a lot and do not have stability in their lives. Some of my students are parents and have to maintain a home while trying to graduate. Some struggle with different disabilities both learning and mental. For these reasons, my students can not afford something as basic as pencils or paper for school. These students have us in the midst of all of the inconsistencies and find stability and support within our school. This is why I love my job! I give them hope!
My Project
My students are in need of these materials in order to have better learning experiences they deserve. These items in the cart will help me prepare for lessons that are engaging and more hands-on. My class is a reading class and I do not have any class set novels that would be engaging for my students. Each year we do a Holocaust unit that my students become engaged and eager to learn more about, this would be a perfect way for my students to read a story from a different perspective when it comes to the tough topic of the Holocaust. I also need the basics like scissors, glues, markers, etc., to have students engage in their learning, in a more creative way. Like creating learning boards, AVID one-pages, etc. I have students that have extremely low reading Lexiles (reading levels), the average level for my 9th/10th graders is around 3rd grade. Therefore, these activities can help them understand a difficult text. I also work in small groups with my students to differentiate learning, some are in need of close one to one learning with cut-outs and manipulative. The lamination machine would help me prepare these kinds of lessons. Folders, for example, are also needed to keep student work organized and readily available for my students. Ultimately my project is to help guide students to begin their journey to love reading, in hopes that they will pass the state exam! Thank you for reading!
