This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a school in a low-income area. Many of our students don't have the basic necessities to come to school or the means to purchase necessary supplies. At our school, we often give out vouchers for free school uniforms because parents cannot afford to purchase uniforms. We have given out book bags filled with supplies to the most needy students so that they can have their basic classroom needs met. Other students may start with materials but lose track of them due to many housing moves throughout the year.
My Project
Drinking plenty of water has been linked to many health benefits, and my students are always saying, "I'm thirsty, can I have some water?" I'm sure they don't realize that plenty of water leads to better learning, better thinking, better attitudes, and better overall health, but they do understand one of the basic human needs to eat and drink.
My students are at a crucial stage in their development and staying healthy is at the top of the list of important aspects of their lives.
In addition to a water for hydration afterschool, we will use the healthy snacks to teach about healthy practices in general. They will have access to these snacks daily after science club. My students currently bring unhealthy foods to eat. My students want to be healthy and they want to learn.
After Hurricane Maria my students have lost everything and we are trying to rebuild our program. We are starting over and we can't wait to get things rolling again. My students need these basic essentials so they can excel in school and in life far beyond the classroom. When your basic needs are met, you can begin to think about all the enriching things in life besides mere survival.
