Mrs. Arriola from Lancaster CA is requesting Classroom Basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
We need supplies in the classroom that can last for a while and enable the students to make the most of their classroom experience through the use of these items.
My 20 students are enrolled in a project-based class/club that aims to educate students about sUASs and autonomy. The two students submitting this request, Kaitlyn and Kishi, are the club president and vice president whose task is to raise funding for things we need in the class and to run our meetings. Kaitlyn is a very enterprising junior who even has her own successful cupcake business and I feel is destined to become one of community leaders. Kishi, also a junior, is enrolled in multiple rigorous classes including AP Physics. Both are part of the Air Force ROTC program at Lancaster High School.
Other students from the class are in task-related groups like Flight Ops, Media, Simulations, and Research. They range from freshman to senior grade levels and there is an even 50-50 split boys and girls. Go girls!! We live in Lancaster, California, which is sometimes called Aerospace Valley due to the proximity of SpaceX, Edwards AFB, Lockheed Martin, and Northrup Grumman. All my students are very interested in technology!
Our classroom is very STEM(science, technology, engineering, math) based, and with all the amazing stuff going on, the students haven't really had the time to make the classroom their own or even complete public outreach due to their lack of basic supplies.
I believe the students will benefit from these supplies by learning how to build their basic arts and crafts skills that would not usually be used in a STEM classroom. Not only will the students show a rise in creativity but working with these supplies and making posters can help relax students after a day of rigorous classwork.
The goal with this project is for us to have access to supplies that will enable us to broaden our classroom activities and help to keep a fully equipped and functioning class. For example, our media team, who covers public outreach, will be able to make posters that will get word out about our club/class.
I will make the most of the leadership opportunity involved by expanding my knowledge in leading, and communicating with my classmates to ensure that they have what they need and allow them to voice their opinions. I will also support any ideas anyone may have and I will help educate others on subjects they don't understand.
This project is important to me and my school because without supplies there is no real way for the students to unwind. STEM classes can be demanding both physically and mentally. Physically because some assignments include building things, and mentally because there may be math involved and some things are guess and check. An example of guess and check would be when our SIM team had to figure out ways to put 3D objects into the computer program without any guide or instructions. All these factors can wear on us students and knowing that we don't have to worry about paper in the printer or not having paint for posters, can ultimately do us a lot of good.
