it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This will be my second year of teaching fifth grade and I am SO EXCITED! Fifth graders are at that special age where they are maturing and understanding more about the morals of life. One of my favorite aspects of teaching fifth grade is the deep and meaningful conversations we can have as a classroom community. Whether we are talking about issues that have happened at recess, or a main character going through struggles in a novel, these students are able to have compassion and empathy for others.n
My vision this year, is to promote problem solving, kindness, and compassion by reading a series of novels that will teach these concepts.
I would love for my students to be able to read the novels "The One and Only Ivan" and "City of Ember." These books teach students the value of being kind to all and challenging ideas that they disagree with. Reading these books would teach my students about kindness, diversity, appreciation for all, and standing up for what they believe in.
My Project
The novel "The City of Ember" is about a society that has moved under ground in order to avoid an inevitable apocalyptic event. This society has been living underground for over 241 years. The main characters, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, begin to wonder why they have been underground so long and what lies above. The main characters begin to question the government and everything they have been made to believe. By reading this book, students will learn that everyone is entitled to speak their mind and stand up for what they believe in.
The novel "The One and Only Ivan" tells the story of a gorilla, Ivan, who has been locked up in a circus themed mall since he was born.
He then meets Ruby, a baby elephant who has been added to the circus. They develop a strong friendship and Ivan decides that Ruby deserves a better life than what he had. In this novel, there is a recurring theme of freedom and friendship. These themes will help build a better and stronger classroom community for my students.
