Help me give my students the gift of communication. We have an ongoing need for toner for our fabulous printer in order to create communication systems for our non-verbal and language delayed students!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are gregarious, curious and precocious boys and girls in Prek thru the 2nd grade in a title one school. I work with individual students, small groups, and whole classrooms to improve literacy, language, and communication skills. However, some of my students are unable to communicate the way they want to build social relationships with peers, respond to questions in the classroom, make choices and understand the world around them in a meaningful way.
All students have the right to be treated as an autonomous human being with dignity and respect.
They struggle daily but still manage to attack life with a tenacity that frequently leaves me in awe. Not having access to an effective communication system can cause frustration, behavior problems and communication break-down at best and have a negative impact on their dignity as a human being at worst.
Students with communication delays often struggle to express their thoughts and ideas. Some students even struggle to express their simple day to day needs. We have an ongoing need for toner to create picture schedules, low-tech communication systems, and pictures to adapt curriculum books to support students with delays and disorders in communication. Colorful, vibrant pictures are motivating and meaningful and there are many wonderful picture communication systems available to help students. However, they all require access to a color printer, and printers use toner.
How frustrating it would be for us as adults to have to wait for someone to provide us with the words we want to express, this is a reality for some students.
With our color printer, we are able to provide pictures/icons in "real time" to meet the individualized communication needs for each student. We have an ongoing need for toner for our FABULOUS printer to create low-tech alternative and augmentative systems. These tools are a cost effective and easily accessible way for students to perform at a higher level than would be possible without them.
