Wait...what? A solar flashlight can be made with a printer? 3D printers are bringing amazing opportunities for creation and collaboration while incorporating all subject areas. This is pretty exciting for our students in the United States. Now quadruple that excitement when you pair students in the United States with students in an area across the globe without reliable access to electricity!
The sixth graders at my school will be participating in a global partnership with students in another country through "Level Up" to design and build a 3D solar-powered flashlight.
This is a potentially life-changing experience for these students that will hopefully guide them towards interest in a career in STEM areas. Our Title 1 students need access to opportunities that require materials that are not provided by the school's or district's budget. They have a passion for learning and achieving; they just need access to the tools required to succeed.
My Project
My students need filament and other supplies to participate in a collaborative opportunity with students in another country who have limited access to electricity. The students will design and print a 3D solar-powered light source.
This endeavor brings not just academic opportunities but also cultural enrichment to my students.
First, with the necessary materials, students will be able to use one of today's most innovative technologies, the 3D printer. Second, these 6th graders will be gaining experience collaborating with others, an invaluable skill for college and career in the 21st century. Finally, students in both my classroom and students partnering with us in another country will share more than just ideas about designing a light source; they will also exchange information about their respective cultures.
Your generous donations will bring a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to my students. Even better, your donations will support the learning of students partnering with us from across the globe!
