My Students
My students are 4-5 years old and they are from a variety of different economic backgrounds, with 99% of students receiving free lunch. They come to school everyday, enthusiastic, happy and eager to learn. Our school's location is in downtown Miami.
In the neighborhood of downtown Miami, my students are not exposed to many resources that are geared towards a Pre-K/Kindergarten student.
Parents bring their children to school early so that they can take advantage of the free breakfast that is offered everyday so it is inconceivable to ask them to donate school supplies when it is difficult for them to find food for their children. It is because of this reason that I am seeking the assistance of DonorsChoose and their sponsors to help me to help my students.
My Project
My students will use play dough to strengthen the muscle tones in their little hands when they flatten, squash, squish and roll it. Studies have shown that when students work with play dough, it helps to develop their muscles and helps with their writing skills. Having developed muscles is extremely important because I am also teaching the children how to use scissors to cut on a straight line.
In addition to helping with the development of the children's muscles, squishing and rolling play dough can also be therapeutic and very calming to the students after the Hurricane.
This will help to ease the tension they are left to deal with and it's like giving them a stress ball.
