Students Flip The Script On Science With Flip Cams
My students need a Flip Cam to record, analyze, and disseminate our experiments, classroom debates, and projects on scientific concepts and current events.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In an increasingly connected world, students need to have experience using technology to disseminate their views on platforms inside and outside of the classroom. This is especially true for students of science, who must develop the capacity to communicate their findings effectively.
My 8th grade "Science Giants" hail from a public charter in Texas that is trying to help change the conversation about education in the state and the country.
Though many of these students face economic hardship, language difficulties, and the possibility of relocation, they do not make excuses for themselves. They have a lot of pride for their community, their school, and their college-themed homerooms, evidenced by the voracious cheers they create and perform during Friday pep rallies. As students in my science class, they are so curious, eager to explore and discuss the applications of the concepts we study in class outside of our four walls.
My Project
These "Science Giants" love to show off their knowledge. Instead of fighting their hyper-connected social lives, the usage of the Flip Cam will integrate the scientific concepts that we cover into their everyday interactions with friends, family, and the web. Students will have the opportunity to record themselves and their peers performing experiments, engaging in debates over current events involving science, and presenting science projects. As a class we will have the ability to review these recordings, allowing us to perform three great activities: analyze and improve our approach to the scientific method during experiments, discuss the strategies used during debates, and constructively critique student-led presentations on scientific concepts. By posting the recordings to Twitter, YouTube, and our class's social network on Edmodo, the experiences in our classroom will not fade away but remain available for students to return to and show to others.
The extensions offered by a Flip Cam in our classroom will not only reinforce students' understanding of scientific concepts.
Just as importantly, my students will begin to grasp the importance of delivering their message, findings, or thoughts in a respectful, informative, and interesting manner. Such experiences will expand my students' ideas about the Internet as they explore the wonderful tools of social networking and video beyond the functions that 8th graders typically use them for.
