My Students

Just imagine *waves hand in front of face for dramatic affect* a blooming playwright whose story remains trapped in her head because of the scary word “Dyslexia” was all her parents knew... what about the child who has the blueprint for how to sustainably feed the world trapped behind “you just aren’t that good at school.” I don’t just teach “students with special needs” I teach humans that will one day make history! Every person has a story to tell, help me help my students tell theirs!

My Project

While the United States teeters between completely shutting down and going out to buy just one more roll of toilet paper, Fulton County Schools has put their best foot forward with keeping the learning pathways wide open. Although schools are shut down, students are required to keep up with weekly assignments, check in with educators, and find a constructive outlet when their two hours of school work is done for the day. I’m ready to step this “teleschool” adventure up a notch and provide students with journals to record their first person experiences. Producing journal entries that could one day be used as a first person account in their own classroom! Students will review first person accounts during the time of a national crisis, they will dissect language in order to identify how the author’s writing provided one with a clear understand of the life in their shoes, and it will provide as a healthy outlet for students to simply pull all the pinging thoughts out of their minds and place it down on paper. How else do you get students with special needs engaged in writing... you make it relevant to them!
