Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Humanities teacher at Fannie Lou Hamer High School. Our school has been teaching "at-risk" students in a successful learning environment for 10 years. High percentages of our students enter high school performing below state averages in math and reading, but leave our school admitted to city and state colleges.
In my Humanities class we have time each day for silent reading and writing. Silent reading has the potential to give students a personalized path to explore literature and expression. If students are engaged in their reading and care about their books, their enthusiasm drives their work and pushes them further as readers.
Most of my students come from homes without libraries of books. Many of them have never visited a bookstore or purchased their own novels. They never really experience the joy of finding and relishing each page of their own novel. They want the experience of browsing through a bookstore, of researching their ideas, and following their dream books from chapter one to completion.
I want each of my Humanities classes (50 students) to create their own library! My students have researched and chosen their own book about our year's topic of laws and morals. They chose books in groups and will read the books with their peers discussing the issues in the literature and our theme. This library will be something to share with students in the years to come and to continue to build!
To complete this project, we would need the books listed. This experience would reaffirm their roles as active learners and push reading as a personal journey filled with joy, surprise, and constant questioning.
