Students Create Tutorials Using I-Pad and Promethean Board
My students need an iPad to sync with our Promethean Board in order to create screencasted tutorials and also to use in other learning applications. They also need an iPad case, and a bundle of 6 Styluses.
To teach something is to really know it! My students will use our iPad to become teachers by creating tutorials saved online for their peers to access using a technique called screencasting - a technique that allows you to record a movie with audio of what you are doing on a computer.
I have 25 active third-graders in a small town school in Alaska.
Many of my students come from families struggling economically. I have an autistic student who loves the computer. My class academically ranges from students far below grade level to a couple students gifted in Math and Reading.
My Project
My third grade students engage in active learning, and the use of technology is very motivating. This project involves having students create a tutorial, such as a lesson on math congruency, and using the iPad to control the Promethean Board will screencast their lesson and save it online for their peers to access. These screencasts made by kids for kids allow them to teach each other concepts in words that makes sense to them. Having an iPad will make this process much more kid-friendly as they use it to control the Promethean Board while they record the audio. Students will also be able to use the iPad for other learning applications. I will also use it to control the Promethean Board, so I am not always "stuck" in the front of the classroom.
Students learning from each other as they create and teach using these tutorials will provide leadership opportunities that will build their self-esteem and engage them in learning.
This project will motivate all of my students, from the struggling learners to the gifted. Having this technological tool will also be used in many other applications as I differentiate my instruction to meet each individual need.
