My school library is full of students from middle school (6-8th) all the way through high school (9th-12th). With this age diversity, my facility has an abundance of traffic and use by young adults wanting to learn and have new experiences. I love that my students are excited to be in the library whether they are checking out books, my displays, or in there to use our Maker/Art Lab.
Our school setting is generally rural with nearly half of our students attending school from a Native American Reservation that is located over 40 miles away.
Many come to school tired, hungry, and without much support or opportunity at home. Round trip, some students are on the school buses nearly two hours each day.
My Project
Sometimes the only way to promote students' self-worth is for them to find their niche and it isn't always sports or academics. For some students, art is where they can open up and be themselves. By having my DonorsChoose request of paints, paintbrushes, and canvas' fulfilled, students would be given that chance to fit in. Everyone loves to look at art other people have created. Allowing students to create something to be proud of and that their fellow students will admire can go a long long way in nurturing students' self-worth.
A high population of learners in my school do not have access to art materials at home or in their local communities.
Looking forward to this opportunity would give them a great incentive to make it to school each day!!
