My Students

My middle school students are often faced with many difficulties and challenges in their lives that would bring some adults to their knees. Despite the challenges they face, they are still eager to learn. However, they are now facing another challenge. Due to limited funds, the students are not able to reach their highest potential.

My students attend an inner city school, and often wonder where they will live next or where their next meal will come from.

They should not have to worry about whether or not they have books to use for school in addition to their other challenges.

My Project

"A Monster Calls" is a novel that teaches students content that goes beyond what is written on the pages and teaches them how to express emotions in a healthy manner. The main character, Conor, is a young boy learning how to deal with his mother's cancer and inevitable death. In the beginning, Conor deals with his mother's illness poorly; however, throughout the novel, Conor learns how to deal with his emotions and how to express his feelings through verbal communication.

This lesson is something that is vital for young adults to learn and master.

By learning new coping mechanisms at a young age, they will be able to help themselves and others deal with troubling situations.
