My Students

My 8th Grade Math students are learning to love the synergy of technology, math, and real life. These students learn most effectively using hands-on materials and methods. These students have limited access to technology on a large scale, which they may be required to use in future education or employment. These students live in a rural East Tennessee community and many do not have any computer or technology access at home. In addition, my classes include students of all academic abilities and aptitudes.

My Project

All my students want to do the best work they can, and when it comes to some higher math concepts, that work requires a calculator. When working with these math concepts, it is helpful that students learn using the tools that will be allowed on the state assessments. However, in our rural area, most students do not have access or funds to acquire the specific calculators that are needed to be successful.

Having calculators for our classroom would make assignments more accessible if every student could have a calculator for personal use, rather than having to share with other students.
