Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a community where one third of my students are homeless. These 6th graders have traumatic pasts and are living day to day, yet they come to school every day fighting for their education. My students persevere in an environment where they have been treated as a second choice. They are kind, bright, engaging students who deserve access to stimulating, thought-provoking books.
These students are avid readers, love math, are drawn to scientific projects, and are devoted to creating lasting relationships with each other and their community.
My Project
These books have been hand picked by my students. The books range from second to sixth grade levels because, unfortunately, not all of my students are reading at grade level. I am confident that these books will increase their interest in reading which will be reflected by growth across the curriculum. Books centered around young readers, the military, bullying, family differences, and friendship are included in this project.
The easel that I have requested will help students who need extra one-on-one time get the attention and materials they need to succeed.
Additionally, book series such as Judy Blume and Andrew Clements will give my lower readers access to exciting, new books at their reading levels. The literature that I am requesting for my students already have a "home." In other words, I know exactly where each book fits in our classroom. We just need your help in getting everything through our door!
