Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As teachers in an ICT setting and low-income/high poverty school district, our students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, we are looking to keep things simple and provide our students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Our students are courageous and very motivated.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of our classroom we focus on their potential and growth while they are with us. We may not be able to control their home lives. However, we can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, we are hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
The literacy-based items that we are requesting for our students already have a "home" in our ICT classroom. In other words, we know exactly where everything will go. All materials will be used during guided reading. We just need your help in getting everything through our door!
Guided reading is a key part of a balanced reading framework and an essential element of a successful reading workshop.
The mini write-and-wipe boards and write-and-wipe markers will be a great addition to our guided reading groups. The boards and markers will be used to review and teach sight words. These boards will be easier to manage for me, Ms. Rodriguez, and the students. We have small spaces for our guided reading groups. The size of these boards will allow students to cover their boards when reviewing sight words and they will save space; making the students feel comfortable and engaged during guided reading.
We will use these materials to aid us in the process of becoming life-long readers. The donations to this project will help to improve our students' literacy abilities.
As the teachers, we have done extensive reading and have attended professional development on Guided Reading in the primary grades. Yet we truly need your support to make this a reality. Thanks!
