My students need a fish tank to learn responsibility and animal compassion.
My students come from all different types of backgrounds and cultures. My homeroom alone includes ten different languages! This school has an impressively strong sense of community, as well. It is truly unparalleled how our school community can come together for the common goal of helping each other grow. These students deserve nothing but the best!
We are diverse and value working collaboratively.
Our students are engaged learners! The students are challenged to think critically and to become problem solvers. Our students are also part of STEAM classes, and they love incorporating technology when our resources allow.
I am requesting a fish tank for my classroom to replace the one that cracked at the very end of this year.
Having a fish tank these past two years has been beyond wonderful.
It has created such an engaging environment for not just science, but math as well (those are the only two subjects I teach). In science students study living systems, so they fish have not only helped them understand vertebrates, but have also helped them to develop compassion. We have discussed ways to conserve the environment, and how that helps keep animals healthy.
It has also helped students to take a break and refocus, and has helped students who are upset to calm down. We have also used it in Math as examples in instruction, including teaching volume. We also use it for teaching responsibility. Students really take an interest and love the fish by naming them and being given the job of being sure they are fed.
At the very end of this year the tank started leaking. We thankfully found wonderful homes for the fish with my students and other school family. I sill have past students come back and talk about the fish they took care of.
Looking forward to this year, I know the upcoming students are excited to watch over and learn with these fish.
