Student Yoga

My Students

Our classroom is a comprehensive special need room with a wide range of students presenting with both physical and mental disabilities. Many of the students come from broken homes or poverty stricken living conditions. Daily Yoga has helped with behavior and physical needs.

Our students are low income disabled students that often have extremely difficult home lives.

They are motivated and want to learn, but are faced with many life obstacles. Our school is a fantastic place to work with great administrators, teachers, and by far the best students! We just have great financial needs and it at times can be difficult to fund creative ideas. We are a Title I school that has always met or succeeded or academic expectations. Around 75% of our students are on the free and reduced lunch program and are at the poverty level. Our student population often comes to us with little real world exposure and need a great social/emotional needs.

My Project

On a daily basis, we perform a kids oriented Yoga lesson as part of our morning meeting and preparation for the day. Currently we complete the lessons, but the students have to sit on a tile floor or a large gym mat that takes two people to carry in and out of the classroom. The Yoga mats will help our students on a daily basis with teaching them the idea of personal space, focus, and flexibility. They will also greatly add to their comfort and ability to perform better during these Yoga lessons. The mats can also be used when we go to inclusion activities such as specials and assemblies to help them remain calm and understand their space. All of our students participate in the yoga activities at their individual level and it is an amazing sight to see!

Students will be absolutely more comfortable and enjoy the lessons with more focus.

Yoga has already changed their lives in the areas of focus, self-determination, and in physical terms. It also provides us with another avenue to promote physical therapy goals and improve overall health!
