Student Versus Nature: A Survivor's Story Is Waiting to Unfold!
My students need supplies such as a compass, a fire starter, tarps, and a flashlight to learn how to engage and relate with nature, to get out of the classroom and reconnect with nature.
My biggest challenge is to get and keep my students engaged. They struggle with a multitude of challenges and distractions in high school, and they still try their hardest every day.
My students are smart, intelligent and driven.
They accept challenges that they find in their path and push. Half of my class have disabilities that make it difficult for them to maintain their focus and stay involved in the class. They are a lively, brilliant, and quirky bunch of young people. Our school is a racially and economically diverse school. We have a strong community and are known throughout the district for having strong academics, but resources are sadly lagging behind. Having modern technology, like the student response system, would help keep my class engaged and bring them into the 21st century.
My Project
Fox News recently stated, "With a majority of Earth’s human inhabitants living in urban and suburban areas, a phenomenon is occurring that has never previously existed: An increasing number of people are afraid of nature." So many people are now afraid of nature that this is a recognized mental disease. The week long unit will end in nature hike where they will put to use all their skills they have learned.
It's time for our youth to get reacquainted with Nature.
My students need this equipment to go out and experience nature and overcome any fear or uncomfortable feelings they have. They will put together a "bug out" bag, (items they should have in their car in case they are stranded), which will include sunscreen, insect repellant, water treatment tablets, TP and a flashlight. They will construct a tarp tent using the 8'x10' tarp, tent stakes and para-cord. They will also use the para-cord to learn about knot tying. They will learn how to make fire using 7 different methods, including using tinder and a striker box. They will trail navigation and tracking skills by using their compass. The week long unit will end in a nature hike where they will pack up all their gear in their camo backpack, and put to use all their skills they have learned.
A large portion of science shows that people who spend more time in the woods experience improved health and fitness. We are endowed with an intrinsic affinity for nature. Traditional wisdom and modern science point us in the same direction – go to nature and be healthy!
