Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is an inner-city school in which most of the population will be the first in their family to attend college. Many of my students are minority, immigrants or first-generation Americans like myself. Their parents work hard to provide a safe home environment for them with few resources. Our school is a compassionate place to work where the staff gives unconditionally to our students and families. We are currently changing our in school suspension room into a student support center which forests self-reflection and ownership through restorative practice and mindfulness.
My Project
This school year we have changed our current In School Suspension Room into the new "Student Support Center" where we are using Restorative Practices for students to take ownership of their actions and begin the healing process. As an Equity Leadership Project, I am part of a team of teachers who are elevating our mindfulness practices at our school. Currently, when students are assigned to the Student Support Center they participate in healing circles and Mindful Meditation. A Restorative Practice approach is leading the change in how we handle disengaged students who are struggling with behavior problems, class cuts, and truancy.
Through this project, we are continuing our efforts to make the center a mindful environment with various activities centering around self-awareness and worth.
This project will supply the room with a mediation lamp which has relaxing music and essential oils diffuser creating a calming environment for where disengaged students can build connections with other students and teachers. Currently the student support room has white walls and we want to create a calming atmosphere for our students and staff to connect and do the work needed for our students to feel comfortable in school. The artwork represents our students cultural and urban background making the space there own. If the students feel welcomed in the support center then we can assist them with their situations that are facing during the school day getting them back on track and back into the classroom. This work has been beneficial to our students and we are already seeing a decrease in truancy and disengagement.
Through this project we will continue using our mindful and restorative practices to change the culture of how we interact with our disengaged and at-risk student population at our school.
