My school, located in the heart of downtown St. Paul, brings together students from incredibly diverse backgrounds. They arrive in my classroom with a variety of viewpoints and life experiences and an intense drive to learn.
During the school year, my students have access to books in our classroom library.
Because opportunities for books at home are not always available, I want to be sure my students start their summers off right by ensuring that each one of them leaves school with one great book of their choosing to read while classes aren’t in session.
My Project
The stakes for children who do not read over summer vacation are high! Research studies show that students experience significant learning loss when they do not participate in educational activities during the summer months. The students who can least afford to lose ground as readers are often the most likely to suffer from summer reading loss and fall behind their peers.
Giving students books to take home on the last day of class is a powerful way to increase the likelihood of summer reading and keep them from losing ground while they are away from the classroom.
What we do during this final month of the school year, can increase the odds that students will choose to read this summer!
I have worked with every student to choose a book that is a great fit for their reading level and interest. Having students choose their own books means they will have something in-hand that will keep their passion for reading alive over the summer and keep them where they need to be to succeed when they return in the fall!
