Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Oprah Winfrey once said, “Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it.” As members of the MES Pacers running club, our young runners are learning just that!
Running reminds you that even in your weakest moments, that you are strong.
Our runners are a dynamic group of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students, some with running experience and some new to the sport, who have a desire to achieve something they never dreamed they would...to run a 5K race! This fall season, our MES Pacers team understands the meaning of dedication. They have committed to an 8-week, 16 session training program in order to strengthen their minds and bodies, develop friendships, learn about healthier eating habits, and most importantly, become more physically active! One of the main focuses of our team is that of positive motivation and encouragement for each other. We understand that we all run at a different pace, but our practices are full of, "You can do it," "I'll run another lap with you," and "One Team, One Family!"
My Project
The MES Pacers have begun their 5th season of training students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade to run and complete a 5K race. This season, our team is a very impressive group! At our first practice on Tuesday, September 11th, 2018, our runners completed an amazing feat...every student runner ran at least one mile at this first practice! As a coach, I was in awe of them for so many reasons! These young runners were so full of energy, excitement, and determination!
Our runners need team t-shirts to build a sense of team spirit, team unity, and pride which they will wear when competing in a 5K race after 8 weeks and 16 sessions of hardcore training on October 27th, 2018!
The MES Pacers program is one that is multi-faceted. We focus on team building, self-esteem, healthier eating choices, and of course, physical fitness. Each week the MES Pacers set goals for the 8-week program such as why friendships are so important, who in our life supports and helps us to achieve our goals and dreams, and so many others. Throughout the course of the week between practices, students are asked to focus on making at least three healthier eating choices. For young kids, choosing to drink a glass of water or milk instead of a soda is a big deal and a very important one when training your mind and body to be in its best condition for a 5K race! During our 8-week training program, our runners are also asked to exercise for at least 30 minutes three times per week. The MES Pacers are thrilled to be in their 5th season as a running club!
