My Students

Our high school is a rural school district in Saint Clair, Missouri. Saint Clair is in a high poverty area with over 55% of our students receiving free and reduced-price lunch.

We are starting a student-run broadcast news course next year.

This program will allow our students a hands-on, career embedded opportunity. Students will perform in all functions and roles of production, including research, filming, interviewing and editing. Students will work with local news broadcasters to ensure they are building skills necessary to enter into entry-level broadcasting and film positions.

My Project

In their Broadcast News course, students engage in hands-on learning. Students will serve in all aspects of productions. This course is teacher-guided but students have ownership of the entire broadcast. It is profession-embedded learning. Students are able to leave the classroom and work in entry-level broadcasting and film industry professions.

In order to film the broadcast, students will utilize the requested iPads.

We chose iPads because of the ease of editing with iMovie and the portability of the tablets. Students will be able to bring the iPads on location to film as well as in their future studio. Students will create weekly short productions as well as monthly longer productions. Also, students will be participating in sports broadcasting activities and will film at athletic games and put together sports broadcasting packages for the news production.
