My Students

The 5th grade students at Oaklawn are curious, brilliant and creative learners!

They take advantage of ever opportunity given to them.

They love to use modern technological tools to explore ideas. Creative projects - especially those done in small groups - are some of their favorite learning experiences.

They ask a lot of questions, and I love to guide them toward discovery of answers and solutions. I teach three sections of science, so all 5th graders at our school will have the opportunity to experience the activities we do. I work very hard to make the classroom exciting and surprising every day!

My Project

3D printing is vitally important to how we imagine, design and experiment in our science class! Student are dreaming up engineering solutions to school and community problems and creating prototypes out of all sorts of materials, and 3D printing parts has become a major part of that.

3D printing has changed what is possible in a classroom, and I want to continue to move toward limitless possibilities.

We have been using a Printrbot Simple for two years now. It is a great machine, and requires a lot of teacher time with troubleshooting to maintain and adjust. It has a small print volume of only 4cm by 4cm. It has been a GREAT machine for us to build and learn on - and now we're ready for an upgraded addition!

The Ultimaker 3D printer I'm requesting is a more robust machine, one that can be used by students more independently. It is also faster, allowing students increased creativity and access by not being tied to multi-hour print jobs. Its build volume is a huge 22 x 22 x 20 cm dimensions which will allow students to think big, literally and imaginatively!
