Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When August brings the start of a new school year it brings fresh opportunities for success! For the 2009/2010 school year, I will have 20 first graders (likely to be 100% English Learners, 100% served by the free and reduced lunch program) ready to learn to read, write, solve complex math problems and think critically about the world around them.
Unfortunately, due to the economy and issues of poverty, these wonderful children do not have the basic resources at home that they need to support them on their quest for knowledge. Without pencils and paper, it is impossible to record their thoughts. Without scissors and glue, it is impossible for them to create.
In this proposal, I have requested basic materials including pencils, pencil sharpeners, markers, crayons, scissors, glue and more which I will assemble to make a "Welcome to School" kit that each child can take to use at home. These supplies will not only enable all children to complete their homework but also empower them to engage in learning, thinking and creating outside of the classroom.
All children deserve to have beautiful, new resources at the start of the promising new school year. By funding this proposal, you are providing these students with a strong foundation for a successful year! Together, we can!
