Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students and families speak Spanish, Mam, Tongan, Arabic, Tagalog, Karen, Karenni, Nepali and Chinese. Since 45% of our students are English Language Learners, we have a rich academic program to meet their language needs. Our newcomer program serves up to forty students in our community who have moved here in the last year and speak little English. We also have a rich African American student population that thrives at our school.
Our students reflect the neighborhood's diverse immigrant and minority populations.
Throughout the year, we have cultural celebrations to celebrate the histories, cultures, and accomplishments of our diverse student population. While 9 out of 10 of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, we are rich in so many ways.
My Project
My students love reading, and our classroom library has lots of books they have been well worn during reading time in the classroom and at home. But like any good library, titles need to be replaced when loved too hard.
This project is filled with prequels and sequels, new graphic novels and their new love, non-fiction titles, all student requested!
When students are engaged in reading, this helps them in all subject matters. It increases their imaginations and let's them explore places they could only dream of. It helps them to connect with others who have the same interests and builds their learning confidence.
