My students need a printer and ink to attach to the classroom student computer for research projects. The copier and scanner is also useful for students who lose homework.
Have you ever done a school project and you wanted pictures to paste on the presentation board? Yes? Some of my students don't have computers, internet or printers at home. I have a student computer but no student printer. I want to have a technology center in my classroom for student use.
I have two core groups of students this year.
The students abilities range from highly gifted to English language learners. The socioeconomic range is diverse as well. Many of my students have told me they do not have internet or computers at home, yet they are enthusiastic to accomplish rigorous academic tasks. I want my motivated students to have the same opportunities as all kids. I also have students of many different languages and though the parents are supportive they may have had a different schooling experience and don't know how to support their child in academic subjects. I volunteer my time to stay after school each week for students who need that extra support.
My Project
Here are a few examples of projects that we do in class that students may benefit from having a color printer. One is a math project we do when they are learning about mean median and mode. Students do a survey, calculate the results and create a colorful display of the results. A second project is a picture display board for science where students are asked to represent different types of weathering and erosion. Many students choose to go on a hike and take pictures of themselves. However, students who don't have someone to take them on a hike are given the opportunity to find pictures on the internet to represent the different types of weathering and erosion. A third example is a health project where students make a triangular diorama depicting their physical, mental, and social health. They cut out pictures from magazines, print pictures from the Internet, and print lettering and text that would explain the balance of the three types of health in their own life.
My philosophy as a teacher is that every child deserves a champion, someone to believe in them and advocate for their education.
This year, I am my students' champion. If they have motivation, I want to be there for them so they can accomplish what they set out to achieve.
