Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am teaching third-grade students who come from various backgrounds. A majority of my students do not speak English as their first language and were not born in the United States. However, each student works extremely hard to learn English and loves to learn.
As a class, we explore what it means to be a learner in our community and communities around the world and how we can apply that exploration to everyday life.
Students explore various types of literature, including historical fiction texts, fairy tales, non-fiction informational texts, fables, Pourquoi tales, and many more. Students also begin to become critical thinkers by exploring how these texts are constructed and why the writers are writing them. We also develop critical thinking skills through our various math units about multiplication and division, area and perimeter, telling time, measurement and data and fractions.
My Project
In third grade, the curriculum speeds up, becoming more rigorous for our classes. Students are held more accountable for their participation, as well as, held responsible for keeping track of their materials. In a typical classroom, students have a desk where they can slide their materials into the storage areas. However, these areas have become increasingly distracting for students as they have the ability to hide their hands and play with various items in this space.
Help me gain my student's attention and participation by providing some essential organization tools to make my students' lives.
To do this I want to eliminate the traditional desk storage and give students storage on the back of their chair. To do this I would like to provide my students with chair pouches that allow them to store ALL of their belongings. This would mean students would no longer have desk storage for their hands to hide in. Other items in the project will allow for simple organization around the classroom and in the student's individual chair pouches.
All of the included items will allow for students to stay organized and productive in our classroom. These resources will be used at the start of next year when school is back in session! With students being out of school for nearly 6 months, they will need all the organization and guidance they can get for a smooth transition back to school.
