My students need DVDs, CDs, labels, markers, and some desktop publishing supplies to assist in creating their portfolios/projects for movie production and distribution.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students need and love Drama. Movie making is just one outlet to assist them in conquering challenges in their personal lives and at school. They can openly express feelings and research solutions all while addressing social and civic issues while acquiring academic skills and gaining confidence.
My ninth through twelfth grade students are some of the most talented, passionate, and hopeful students I have met in my seventeen years of teaching.
Although we are a part of a Title One District (which by definition means 50% of our students live in poverty), our students are not poor in spirit, talent, or desire/drive to achieve greatness. Incidentally, 97% of the total population of our school is African American. Each and every child has a story to tell. Our goal is to change the "would be stories of their lives based on their circumstances" to movies of hope and achievement. We will do this by producing student written and directed movies that will be distributed to various audiences and presented to a world wide audience. The portfolio process will assist them with skill acquisition and confidence. Although statistics say our students are less likely to succeed, we hope to defy the odds with this movie project and change the stories to ones of achievement and hope.
My Project
At our school, there is an increased call to integrate and collaborate to create lessons to maximize student learning potential. An emphasis is placed on student application/demonstration of standards in particular"Project Based Learning." Our innovative integrated movie making unit created by the Drama teacher who will consult the mass communications instructor and an English teacher to teach students writing, editing, and producing original movies. The students will collaborate to write and produce original scripts using Movie. Major character education themes will be the topics: fairness, respect, discipline, responsibility, and integrity. “Arts education increases students’ learning potential and compliments learning in other disciplines.” Michael Seamon
The items requested, ie.: Cd's, DVDS, markers, pens, index cards, sheet protectors, memory cards, and other desktop publishing supplies will be used to to make the portfolios and will be critical to completing our movie making goals.
A study published in Champions of Change (1999) cites with participation in drama, "gains in...self-concept/motivation/higher levels of...tolerance towards others” among youth of low socioeconomic backgrounds.
Your donations literally with assist is changing the "stories"/destinies of students who have few if any opportunities. Movie making will not only assist them with skill acquisition,it can inform and positively affect the lives of those who view the films too. Certainly worth the cost.
