Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Laboratory work could never be shared with the world without the information that is taken down by scientist throughout the world. The scientific method needs a specific amount of structure that science notebooks provide students with. Science notebooks promote critical thinking skills and learning

I teach in a charter school in the North East Los Angeles area.

The majority of the students are lower income, Socially Economically Disadvantaged, underrepresented minorities in the sciences, engineering, technology, and mathematics fields. Last year, after noticing that a few students where having trouble keeping up, I provided them with materials in order for them to be able to participate in class. It is my goal this year to make sure that no child will have to fall behind or stress about the materials that they need to participate as a student in science.

My Project

Having low income students that struggle to bring in the basic materials to school, it is important to make sure that they are given the opportunity to access proven methods to improve understanding and achievement. By providing the actual science notebook, the students will be able to make use of a indispensable tool to learn science effectively. The use of the science notebook in the classroom as a form of organizing, detailing, and reflecting on the topics that are being discussed is a key component to helping students build critical thinking skills, deepen understanding, and improve comprehension, as well as raise test scores. Students will be expected to utilize the science notebooks daily and reflect on the work done each class period.

My students need a class set of 5 tab dividers, 1 inch binder notebooks, and filler paper to have inquiry based science notebooks to use in the classroom.

Keeping students motivated in science, engineering, technology and mathematics can be difficult, but making sure that the comprehension and needed skills are there does not need to be. By having the right tools, such as the science notebook, a student can build, improve, and master the skills needed to go into a STEMs field with confidence.
