"Capturing Magical Moments"
I currently teach high school English at a charter school located in Maryland within a high-need community.
Earlier this year I was persuaded by my students to become their adviser and assist them with producing a yearbook for the 2009-2010 school year. The school where I teach has NOT had a yearbook since 2007 as no one was willing to spend the time after school to guide the students. The administration had no plans to incorporate "Yearbook" within the English curriculum for reasons unbeknown to me. The students spear-heading this effort are intelligent, dedicated juniors in my Honors English.
After agreeing to assist my students with the project, I researched various yearbook companies to find out the process for producing a quality book. To my surprise the process of producing a book has drastically changed since I was editor of my high school yearbook 30 years ago. The entire process (graphics, photographs, layout and design) is now done online.
My students were proactive and began taking pictures at various school events with disposable cameras that they purchased with their lunch money. They were hoping to submit their photographs for consideration in the yearbook, only to find that the photographs would need to be of digital quality.
On behalf of my students I approached Administration about the possibility of purchasing at least two (2) digital cameras for the students to use specifically for yearbook. I was informed that this would not be possible. My students were crushed when I broke the news to them and have begun to lose the enthusiasm that they have carried for months. I asked my students not to give up as I believe we can still produce a quality book.
Your assistance would help to make the dream of my students a reality and leave a lasting impact. They will be able to look back years from now at their yearbook, reminisce about high school and know that you helped make their yearbook possible through your generous donation.
