One student worked on his high school diploma with us for about 18 months, made little progress, then after some discussion, switched to pursuing his GED. He completed his GED within one month of starting the process; he is very competent, just bored with school. He is currently working full time and very happy with his decision.
Another is a homeless youth who has been with us since our program opened in 2015.
He is pursuing his GED in order to get a steady job. He currently works as an auto detailer and comes in to school when he can. He is very close to completing his GED, having completed three of the four tests.
A different student worked towards getting her high school diploma for about a year before switching to GED. Due to her age (19), her parents were starting to require her to help support the household. She was unable to work and dedicate the time needed to complete high school. Completing her GED will allow her access to a better job and community college when she is ready. She has completed two of the four tests.
My Project
Open Doors Career and Academic Program is a dropout re-engagement program serving students age 16 to 21, many of whom work and/or have families. Our drop-in schedule provides flexibility for our students' busy lives.
By also providing basic needs such as healthy snacks, hygiene products, backpacks and clothing, we give students the support they need to focus and achieve.
We help students complete high-school education or earn a GED while also offering career guidance, opportunities for internships and support for entering college, trade or technical education.
In addition, we provide a variety of support services and referral to community resources.
