We have many eager students and not enough resources! There is nothing more frustrating. Students express their desire to learn, but the resources are limited. My students want to create a photo journalism group to help their peers. There are too many students for the 1 camera we have. (ABC Family)
My students attend a unique learning environment in that they attend a transfer school.
They are over aged and under credited while seeking a second chance. They have outside obligations, children, broken homes, are in foster care, or out on their own. They enter our doors broken but eager for renewal. A lot them are entering after their 3rd High School. They come, get on honor roll and have perfect attendance in our school community. They have the opportunities to experience the best, because we are the best! To that end it is imperative that their journey of success is captured. We would love it if ABC Family could help!
My Project
The students and I brainstormed to try to arrive at a solution for all. We need a camera specifically for this photo journalism group. We are requesting a Canon rebel digital DSLR camera and memory cards. This will allow for more students to utilize the camera while some are rotating the memory cards and editing pictures. With this camera, more of the students will a learn valuable skill set--- not just the yearbook staff students. At my school ALL students are required to complete a graduation portfolio and present it to a panel of educators. They must document their transformation and use technology to present. In addition to their own desired documentaries and fun photo shoots, the Photo journalism group will take the lead with assisting peers in preparing for their exit presentations. They work with their peers by teaching them skills. Photo journalism is a great way for them sharpen their leadership, teamwork, and vocational skills. I will be the advisor for this group.
As an educator in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, It is important for me to expose my students to experiences and skills they may not other wise have been exposed to.
The students came to me because about this project and I thought it was great. Photojournalism and use of a Canon DSLR is a skill that can foster a love for a career. Students gain knowledge, confidence, fulfill a graduation requirement all while completing a hands on project! This is what teaching and learning is all about
