Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban, Title I charter school in California. We have very little funding and our students come from poor backgrounds. The majority of my students do not have the means to buy the art supplies requested. Despite this, my students wanted to help create this project to get art supplies!
My students have an interest in drawing, painting, photography, and design. My students love to draw and use markers to illustrate. I surveyed my students and had them create a list of art supplies that they would buy if someone gave them $100. Many of them realized that good quality art supplies can help their artwork look more professional and are more fun to use. We just had our first student led project funded and my students were ecstatic. They quickly made a list of additional supplies for this project.
My students will greatly develop their artistic skills, such as illustrating, by using the drawing paper, drawing book, and brush markers requested for this project. Another skill my students will develop is real-life problem solving. When students are creating an art piece they have to think critically about what supplies would render the best outcome, choose wisely, and then apply a specific artistic technique to create their artwork. The drawing book will help my students create realistic illustrations that look professional. Finally, at the end of each class, my students take the initiative to clean-up and put all the art supplies away. This also includes wiping off the tables so the next class has a clean workspace.
In Their Own Words
My project idea is to use the markers and requested art supplies for a landscape drawing. I will be drawing mountains, rivers, hills, and plants. After I draw using pencil, I will need markers to color and add details to my artwork. My teacher also likes us to have a clean, neat room, so we need cleaning supplies to help us.
I will be a leader and help Mrs. H. by respecting the art supplies, especially the brush markers. I can show my classmates how to use them correctly and not mistreat them. I can also be a leader by keeping my classroom clean with the cleaning supplies. If you donate, I promise that my classmates and I will greatly appreciate your donation and take good care of all the supplies. We will be polite, share the markers, and be professional with them.
This project is important to me because I have always loved art, but my family cannot afford to buy me art supplies. After our first student-led project was funded, I was really surprised that someone I do not know would be willing to help me and my classmates. This gives me a lot of hope for my future, that people can come together and support my community. When I grow up I want to also be able to give back to my community. This project will help make my school a more positive place.
