My students need the versatile Vex IQ Robotics Construction Kits by Hexbug. Curious tinkerers plus members of our thriving tech club could work on it 5 days a week, before, during, and after school.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The 3,500 students who attend our high school come from widely diverse backgrounds. I've had students who live in beautiful homes, and students who sleep in a car or on a friend's couch. The majority are from working middle class homes that value education, but several are in foster or group home care. Some students need extra support with basic learning, physical access, or handling their emotions and relationships. Other students need opportunities to explore advanced concepts and technologies beyond the regular curriculum. Here in the library, we try to support all students' needs and interests across the spectrum.
What I love about our students is that very diversity that makes our school special.
Kids come to us needing a place to focus alone, to collaborate, to find a book to enjoy, or to gather reliable information on a topic. Some need a place to access technology or to get online because they can't at home. Others want to relax with friends, decompress, explore outside interests, tinker, or create. It’s a constant challenge to make our facility serve the many different needs of our students, but they are polite and appreciative of the services and hands-on learning opportunities we provide.
My Project
Our upstairs makerspace is overseen by an enthusiastic group of tinkerers known as the Tech Club. Thanks to a dedicated president--who often uses his own money to buy equipment for the club--as well as limited library funding available to buy some things for the makerspace, tech club features 3D printing, building computers, and more. The president was able to add a robotics division last year because one member generously brought in his own personal robot kit to work on.
This set of beginner Hexbug Vex kits would keep the robotics program going for this year, expanding access to it beyond the once weekly workshops put on by the tech club.
After some guidance from their more experienced robotics peers in the tech club to get them started, students will be able to come in and work on the kits before and after school and during lunches! This gives access to all students so that they can explore a possible elective (competitive robotics) they might otherwise never have the confidence to sign up for.
For students already in the robotics class, having this equipment available to ALL in the library gives them the opportunity to run workshops and teach others, or experiment and go beyond what they are doing in the class! All interested students will have the opportunity to try out these exciting new kits!
