Student Led Conferences: Ownership in Education

My Students

My students from Coatesville are in 6th grade and this year we are focusing on collaboration and student led conferences.

Over 80% of the students in my school come from low-income families.

Our students tend to perform below-average on state tests and we are actively trying to change that.

Our students are hard-working, passionate, inquisitive students who are deeply committed to learning. We are teaching them to take ownership of their education and of their learning by having students participate in student led conferences with their parents and their teachers.

My Project

Our students are participating in student led conferences this year for the first time. The students are being asked to take ownership over their education by creating portfolios of work they are proud of. The students will collect work form all their classes and display the work in their binders (portfolios). The students will reflect on their education, set goals for themselves and rate their progress in their class.

The students will present their portfolios twice a year at conferences with their parents and their teachers.

We want our students to grow into self-sufficient, confident young people who can discuss their strengths and weaknesses and set goals for the future.
