Student Led Conferences: Empowering 2nd Graders To Lead

My students need 22 special binders and sheet protectors in order to showcase their independent work and their corresponding reflections for student led conferences.

My Students

"A teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary."-- Thomas Carruthers. With student led conferences, we are empowering our students to take a leadership role not only in their education, but also in their ability to understand and convey their strengths and weaknesses to others.

The students of Team 7 are energetic and enthusiastic 2nd graders, ranging in age from 7 to 9, who attend a Title 1 elementary school with a predominantly minority population.

They are always in search of new learning adventures, as well as opportunities to be self directed leaders and learners. They love any opportunity to shine by talking to others about their learning. On any given day in our classroom, the students are actively engaged in many different pursuits of interest in all subject areas. When visitors come to our room, as is often the case, students light up and clearly crave the chance to be an expert. I have seen the excitement in their eyes as they prepare for their moment in the spotlight, whether that be a few moments of reading to a younger class or showing an adult guest around the classroom. My students are the light of my life and I want more than anything to provide as many wonderful learning opportunities as possible. As we say, "Team 7, you rock!".

My Project

Providing the resources for this project will allow students the opportunity to participate in student led conferences that will empower them to become leaders in their own learning process. The portfolio binders and sheet protectors will provide a safe, professional location within which students can document and reflect on their own thinking and learning. The portfolio binders will be the guidebook of student presentations with family members and other interested adults - these binders will be the focal point of the student led conference.
