The students I work with are very diverse, very resilient, and very awesome. In our area, there is a lot of poverty, mental illness, and addiction. Our students have seen things that adults should not have to, and yet they come to school each and every day, with a desire to succeed and a need to just be loved on.
Our school strives to be a safe place, where students are able to forget about their very real worries and simply learn.
And dream. And imagine a world of possibilities. 99% of our students are living in poverty, but still crave adventure and the opportunity to make a difference. Our students are brave, smart, loyal, kind, and tough.
My Project
Our 5th grade is working on a career unit. In order to bring this learning to life, students are working on researching careers for a student-led career day. Students spent time on an online career search, where they were able to look at careers based on school subjects they enjoyed, interests, or types of people they'd like to work with. The website we are working from is great because it provides information on very diverse and unique careers that don't typically get taught to students as possibilities. Some of these careers that our students have chosen to research include: biomedical engineer, military officer, video game designer, criminal investigator, and architectural drafter to name a few.
This project is not only giving students a chance to research careers, it's giving them the hope of being able to make an impact on their worlds.
This project is allowing for the broadening of student's career goals and dreams, while making these goals and dreams seem reachable. Despite 99% of our students living in poverty, students are getting excited about the possibilities to make a difference and be able to do what they're passionate about.
After several weeks of research (by using books, the internet, and being connected with an actual professional in their chosen career), students will organize and present their information on tri-fold display boards to younger students during Career Day. In addition to researching, students will be able to practice the very important life skill of being able to speak in front of peers with confidence. Our students will be able to shine as the experts!
