Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am so excited for this upcoming school year! As the 2018-2019 year ends, I have students planning for next year already. I have a upcoming junior student who approached me with the idea of starting a book club. Extra curricular reading is something not many of my students do. However, so many kids are interested in starting this club because they can be seen walking in the hallways with their nose in a book. By starting this club, they can build a sense of community within high school. It will teach them to lead discussions and take responsibility.
On top of Hurricane Harvey impacting if not all, most of these students, they all also come from low income households.
My kids to not have access to everyday essentials so the extra income for books does not exist. They come from low-income households yet they come to school everyday knowing that they are surrounded by positive role models who would go above and beyond for them individually.
My Project
My students are thrilled to begin their own on campus organization. As soon as they approached me with the idea of supervising a book club, I was pumped. We plan to read a few books related to World War 2, then fundraising to visit the Holocaust Museum in Houston (where our school is located.)
The very first concern they had was money for books and how we could fundraise to be able to have a new book to read monthly.
I want to do everything in my power to be able to give them access to something as simple as books. This club will be student driven so they can learn skills such as leading discussions and planning/organizing. Starting this club is something we are planning early so we never have to question if we will be able to even get the basics of books.
