Mrs. Caterina from S Portland ME is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Student Leaders Learning How to Survive

My students need transportation to the Maine Forest Yurts for their end of year class project.

  • $573 goal

This project expired on April 18, 2018.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

My Students

The students I work with are very special and make going to work every day easy and enjoyable! Many of these students live challenging lives at such a young age. Some do not know where their next meal may come from or where they may be staying on any given night.

No matter what their lives may bring, they ALL need to learn from hands-on activities that focus on team building, communication, working with younger students, responsibility, collaboration, and cooperation.

Our focus in building upon 21 Century Skills. These skills will take them away from their deficits and make them successful in life in the "real world."

My Project

Students have worked all year on leadership skills that can be applied out in the real world. This trip will give them an opportunity to use those skills in a real-life setting. Activities will involve 1. Scavenger hunt, being tied together (forcing students to work together for a common goal (this always brings out the true leaders) 2. Working in small groups building a shelter with limited supplies. 3. Proper fire building and fire safety for cooking their own lunch. Mapping out property (using some math skills) then using their map (learning how to read a map scale) to find their way around. 4. Several cooperative/problem-solving group activities giving students an opportunity work on skills that they will be able to use back in their school setting.

This project allows the students to develop their 21-century skills which will carry over to their leadership responsibilities they bring back to assist in leading our younger students.
