Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our fifth grade classroom is comprised of students who come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. This year, sixty-four percent of students in my classroom are English Language Learners. My students are curious, driven, and compassionate learners who are positive role models in our classroom, school, and local community.
I strive to provide my students with a well-rounded academic, social, and emotional school experience; however, there is a struggle within our school to get many of the resources our students need for this type of engaging, educational practice.
This year, we were not given a classroom budget, so in addition to reaching into my own pocket, I venture outside the walls of our school to seek support to provide my students with supplies to deliver lessons that captivate their interest. It is important that my students understand that their education is valued and is a powerful investment in our community's future.
My Project
My students love to read; however, 80% of my students are not reading at grade level. I have spent the last four months building a love of reading within my students and nurturing their growth as readers. Many of my students are still working on becoming fluent readers, and practice is essential to their success. My students need headsets with microphones to record themselves reading long and short text passages.
I would like to help my fifth-grade students build their fluency and passion for reading, while helping younger students in our school to do the same through recorded read-alouds of popular picture books.
My students are working in small groups and have selected a picture book of their choice. We are meeting in small groups to practice reading their selections while I provide reading strategies to meet their individualized needs. After continued independent practice and coaching, students will record themselves reading the story. A copy of the book and a link to the recording of their read aloud will be provided to our kindergarten through third grade readers so that they can enjoy the book with an older schoolmate (in school or at home!).
The long-term goal is to have students writing, illustrating, publishing, and recording readings of their own stories to share within our school community.
