My Students

I use technology in my classroom every single day. Right now, I have 3 student laptops that have to be shared between 24 students. Many of my students do not have a computer or access to the Internet at home, so they need the exposure and opportunity to technology during the school day.

I teach third grade in a Title 1 School, which means that most of my students come from low income families.

Many students come to school without basic school supplies, many can't afford field trips, and most don't have access to technology at home. My students often lack parent involvement and support, due to parents having to work in the evenings. Regardless of their home life, I want school to by a place where they are loved, cared for, and encouraged to succeed. Many of my students are English Language Learners, who would benefit greatly by additional technology being added to our classroom.

My Project

We do small groups in both Reading and Math. During this time we have four rotations: a group with the teacher, a group on the computers, one hands-on learning group, and one independent learning group. We currently have three student laptops to use during small groups. There are six students in each group, so they have to crowd around and share computers in order for everyone to participate in the technology rotation. During reading groups, my students use the computers to play literacy games, read online stories, read digital copies of our guided reading books, take Accelerated Reader tests, and complete research projects. During math groups, students use computers to practice math fact fluency, play online math games, access the digital copy of our math textbook along with it's additional resources, and enhance their math skills with various online resources. My students love the technology rotation, but don't love having to share computers.

By adding 3 computers to my classroom, all of my students would get the chance to actively learn with technology twice a day.

3 additional computers would allow me to have 6 computers at my technology rotation. I have 6 students in each group, so all 6 students would be able to use their own computer instead of having to share. This would enrich my students' learning opportunities, as well as provide technology experiences to my students who do not have those experiences at home.
