My Head Start Classroom is Federally funded, which means that my student's family income must be below the poverty level. This is a very low income level, which is why it is extremely important to me that I make the 17 children's learning environment as fun, challenging, and educational as possible. The resources of the child's family is limited and I try to help make their Head Start experience an excellent one.
Head Start was created to give these low income children an excellent educational experience before Kindergarten so they are better equipped and ready to learn.
My Project
A new listening center for my classroom will go a long way to help my students improve language and literacy skills by utilizing a listening center.
Many of my students are delayed in the language and speech area and have IEP's (Individual Education Plans) that identify this area as important for their future academic success.
Students in poverty are less likely to be exposed to as much vocabulary as their more affluent peers.
By exposing the students to additional language and literacy programs and CD's it will help them to increase vocabulary and to listen to the speech on the CD's.
