I couldn't be more excited to be working with these third graders. Every student in my classroom brings his or her own unique experience to the table, and that makes us a richer community. These kids are such a neat bunch: our school is a dual-language campus and a Title I school, which means many of our students live in poverty or are learning to speak Spanish and English at the same time. Regardless, they all come to school ready to learn! I love working at a school that is known for its emphasis on community, character, and excellence.
Like many young learners, they thrive on getting to be hands-on and actively exploring the concepts they are learning.
These kids are hard workers who don't necessarily have every advantage in their home lives. We have worked hard to engage our third graders and help them retain learning with hands-on activities, and I have found that the more involved they are, the more they learn and grow.
My Project
One way I provide exposure to hands-on activities is by allowing students independence in the classroom. I often work with small groups of 3-4 students at a back table so that we can have deep exposure to what we're learning. The stools I am requesting will allow us to do two things. One, we will be able to accommodate students at this table. We will also be able to take the mish-mash of seating I'm currently using and allow that to be flexible seating for students working independently.
As much as I want to pretend otherwise, a student-driven classroom tends to be a messy one!
We need a construction paper sorter to allow students that independence they so greatly need while maintaining some sort of organization. This sorter will allow students access to construction paper without creating a mess on the floor or table like we currently have.
